Wellness trends to watch out for in 2022

Not that long ago the entire world shifted, our worlds were turned upside down, and we were forced to change course. Plans were broken, life trajectories shifted, and health became at the forefront of our thinking. Oh, 2022, I don’t know about you but I have deep gratitude for the year many don’t want to name. I founded my embodiment coaching business deep in the depths of a global pandemic and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

All of us were put in a place in which we needed to restructure our lives and reevaluate what it means to be “well” both personally and professionally.

The biggest takeaway?

Wellness is personal and ever-changing. It can no longer be defined by physical fitness alone or mental health alone. BUPA found, during a recent study, that people's ideas as to what contributes to their health and wellbeing, are as individual as the people themselves. What feels good for me, may not for you, and vice versa.

Everything is connected and it’s becoming clearer and clearer that how we do one thing, is how we do everything. How we care for our mental wellbeing, is often the same as how we care for our gut health…. How we tend to, and nourish, our sex lives and relationships often has similarities in how we tend to our overall physical health. How we flow in business is a direct manifestation of how ‘well’ we feel internally.

From immune health and intellectual wellbeing to mental, emotional, and sexual wellness, here’s what you can expect people to be talking about this year - across the multidimensional world of wellness.

Live from the “inside out”

Immune health, gut health, and our long-forgotten best friend The Nervous System

It’s not surprising the current climate has caused a significant increase in people wanting to pay attention to their immune health. Immune health is the new ‘cool’. According to Food & Beverage Insider, more than 4 in 10 customers have increased their purchases of functional foods and supplements, with 58% choosing immune support as their primary focus. That’s a pretty big chunk of people!

What is also becoming clear within the research is that women are far more likely to want to focus on their immune health than men! So, what is trending right now, and on the rise in 2022?

  1. Red light therapy

  2. IV therapy (vitamin drip)

  3. Injection therapy (such as B12 shots)

  4. Infrared saunas

  5. Salt therapies

We are seeing business owners setting up their own at-home spa-like sanctuaries, and prioritising their wellness more than ever. The better we feel, the more abundant we become!

Google searches for ‘gut health’ were up by 83% in 2021 according to BUPA, and this number is expected to rise as we move into 2022. Gut health is not a new term. It simply describes the balance of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria in our gastrointestinal tract. When the gut is in a healthy state, it has a strong percentage of healthy bacteria and immune cells to fight off harmful bacteria and other harmful pathogens such as viruses and fungi. Recent research is starting to highlight the connection between our guts, our emotions, and our brains. The term ‘gut-brain connection’ is high on people's research lists.

The brain is directly connected to the stomach and intestines, and vice versa. For example, the very thought of eating can release the stomach's juices before food gets there, whilst abdominal discomfort can completely change the way we think and feel. Things such as chronic stress, anxiety, and worry, are huge perpetrators of poor gut health. The bridge to all of this? (And the biggest buzzword of the year). The Vagus Nerve! This wonderful nerve, and the biggest nerve in the body, is responsible for the regulation of internal organ functions, including digestion, respiratory rate, and heart rate.

Expect terms such as Vagus Nerve Stimulation to be heavily spoken about this year! As well as Nervous System Regulation and Awareness. The Vagus Nerve is taking centre stage this year as a tool for our wellbeing (and about time too!).

What does this mean for brands? If wellbeing hasn’t been at the forefront of your mind, now is the time! Marketing for wellbeing brands has never been hotter.

Intellectual Wellness

stimulating the brain is where it’s at this year!

Wellness goes far beyond mental health. People are placing a focus on intellectual wellbeing as a top priority. Intellectual wellness is key to our creative nature, and our creative nature forms the foundation of our business. The intellectual dimension of wellbeing encourages creative and stimulating mental activities. Our minds need to be continually inspired and exercised just as our bodies do.

“Emotional-fitness” and “mental health gyms” are popping up a lot. Check out COA for some inspiration.

Intellectual wellness is all about expansion and awareness. Expanding beyond what is comfortable, trying something new, and living a life that keeps you on your toes! Some simple practices include:

  1. Listening to new genres of music

  2. Learning a new skill

  3. Playing games for brain stimulation

  4. Improving sleep quality

  5. Reading for personal grown

  6. Journalling to increase self-awareness

For business owners this see’s us really prioritising those quieter moments. Journaling for self-awareness was huge last year, and expect it to continue. You can download some journal prompts below

Mental Health

an oldie but a goodie

Mental Health is a term we all know very well. It’s a huge dimension of wellbeing, and we all have our own personal experiences of what we think “good” and “bad” mental health is.

More celebrities are speaking up about their own challenges, and we are seeing the stigma being challenged more and more. Moving into 2022, here’s what you can expect to see:

  1. Trauma-informed mental health care. This is a BIG topic, one that is set to change the face of wellbeing as we know it.

  2. Blood tests to aid in diagnosing mental illnesses such as depression.

  3. Psychedelic research becoming more mainstream.

  4. Boundary setting, with a big focus on social media.

Boundaries are a key part of any business strategy. Knowing when to step back, and knowing when to dive into work. If you’re feeling burnt out, or your energy isn’t quite where you’d like it to be, consider your boundaries! You may be surprised.

Sexual wellness

making pleasure openly desirable for all. Bye-bye taboo.

Sexual wellness, a facet of wellbeing that’s been historically kept behind closed doors, is now being talked about more than ever before (hallelujah). It’s becoming so popular that the global sexual wellbeing market is expected to reach $125.1 billion by 2026. The main focus of sexual wellness products is to offer safer sex and improved sexual pleasure (more pleasure, more brand success - trust me!).

Sexual wellness has a direct link with our mental, physical, and emotional health, it’s importance is second to none when it comes to improving life satisfaction and overall wellbeing.

Expect to see sex workshops, group therapy sessions, improved treatment for sexual health, and sexual performance therapies pop up on your social media feeds this year.
